Raattama village
A small village with a shop and ski trails starting right beside it. Our cabin Villa Tupasvilla is in the village on a quiet private road, and Kelo Resort is 10 km away.
Raattama and the surroundings
Raattama is a village in the Kittilä municipality in western Lapland, at the edge of Pallas‑Yllästunturi National Park. There is one shop, a lot of forest and fell, and no queues.
Far from Levi, on purpose
From Kittilä airport you drive through Levi and then a good way further on, about 80 km in all. The bustle stays behind you: the ski trails and the fells are here, the crowds are not.
Forget traveling all the way to Yellowstone, the view from this cabin’s porch easily gives it a run for its money. Nestled in a peaceful, secluded spot, the cabin offers absolute privacy with the Pallas‑Yllästunturi National Park stretching across the opposite shore.
Pallas‑Yllästunturi National Park
The national park begins 500 m from our Saivo cabin, where the nearest ski trail also starts. From Villa Tupasvilla it is 25 km to Pallas. Marked hiking routes run through the park in summer and ski trails in winter.
Saivojärvi and Saivokero
Our Saivo cabin stands on the shore of Saivojärvi. Across the lake are Saivokero and the fell chain of Pallas‑Yllästunturi National Park. In summer there is a rowing boat at the cabin; in winter the lake is where we cut a hole for ice swimming.
Ski trails
From Villa Tupasvilla the trails are 500 m away in the village. From Saivo the nearest trail starts 500 m away, inside the national park. From the Saivo cabin you can join the ski trail along a snowmobile track we make.
Hiking
Snow-free months are for walking in the national park. Snowshoes are included with both cabins for the winter.
Shop and fuel
The village shop is 500 m from Villa Tupasvilla and about 10 km from Saivo. It is open all year, Monday to Friday 10–17 and Saturday 10–15, with different hours on public holidays. Fuel is sold at the shop during opening hours. Restaurant Loimu next to the shop opens irregularly; check with the shop or with us. The nearest larger supermarket is in Muonio, 45 km from Tupasvilla and 55 km from Saivo, where fuel is available around the clock.
Driving from Kittilä airport
Kittilä village and the airport are about 80 km from Villa Tupasvilla and about 90 km from Saivo. You do not need four-wheel drive, but in winter the car must have winter tyres, preferably studded, as the roads can be icy. The road is ploughed when needed. Getting here without a car is hard but not impossible; ask us.
You will want a car
Public transport in the area is sparse. A car makes the cabins, the farm, the national park and the shop all easy to reach.
Seasons
From November to March the reindeer are home in the enclosure, and that is when farm visits happen. The ski trails are maintained from December to April, weather permitting, and skiing is at its best from February to April; snowshoes are included with both cabins. A normal winter day is −10 to −30 °C, but within a week it can swing between 0 and −40. In the polar night a headlamp is good to have. The northern lights can appear when it is dark and the sky is clear; we never promise them. From early May to the end of July it is light through the night. Summer trips are best from Midsummer to the end of September, when the rowing boat is on the lake and the park is for walking.
